Care-Less 5 Loaves

5th May to 17th May 2009

8th May 2009 (Friday) 7pm to 9pm (Open to public)

Wong Shih Yaw, Tan Tuan Yong, Yap Kheng Kin, Shirley Ho and Ivy Li.

About the Exhibition:

This inaugural exhibition of paintings and installations by a group of artists (Wong Shih Yaw, Tan Tuan Yong, Yap Kheng Kin, Shirley Ho and Ivy Li) who called themselves “5 Loaves”, invites you to consider the simple things in life. Their pursuit of art through contemplative practice prompts them to bring their interpretation to the many cares of our daily living. Using allegories, metaphors, representation and other visual imageries, 5 Loaves sends you on a journey of their inner and outer worlds, of dreams and childhood joys to liberation from bondage.

Ivy Inspiration on the Care-Less Exhibition derived from  "My Favorite Things" is a show tune from the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music.

I am creating a series of paintings which depicts objects of my childhood fantasy.  The transition towards adulthood has proven itself to be occasionally mind-numbing and unimaginative. In accordance with the exhibition theme “Care Less”, this series of works is a recollection of the bits and pieces from my personal utopia. The documentation of Ivy’s happy thoughts is done in the hopes of it being like a memory box, which might just be able to take me to my secret haven when life gets old.

Rasha Eleyan

rasha20and20pics

About Artist:

Born in Dubai in 1978, with BA in Fine Arts from the Yarmouk University (1996-2000) and Advanced painting and nude drawing from Libera Accademia Di Belle Arti Di Roma, Rome (2004-2006). In 2001, when Rasha had finished her studies in Jordan, she moved to Singapore as an associate producer for Walt Disney television, after 4 years she decided to resume her fine arts studies in Rome. She now lives and works in Singapore where she illustrates for magazines and kid's story books and of course paints.

About exhibition:

In her (long tea Break) exhibition the paintings seems to always contain elements that are united and isolated from their environment. The indeterminate location of the scene removes them into a cosmos that is without space or time far from all definite historical or social reality. Letting them express a complete single experience in their unreal cosmic space - the relationship between the elements and their surroundings is only imaginable in the world of dreams where happiness is easier to conceive when outside social reality. In each painting at least one of the elements seem to stare at the viewer in the eye as if inviting them into this unreal place.

There's generous use of symbolism (dog, fish...) and the works are very much inspired by pop art which shows in the use of pop culture icons such as Clint eastwood, Mr. spock, Kermit the frog...

‘REMIX’ by Emmanuel Monzon

em

REMIX’ will be the first exhibition that Mr Emmanuel Monzon will be having in Singapore, and he hopes to inspire the visitors as the come to view his works.
About the Exhibition:

“Emmanuel Monzon is a painter. However, what he exhibits under the form of a large painting format is an illusion, what he provides to see and declares being an original painting is no more than a reproduction. (The drawings, l’ekta or the digital file is kept by the artist) It is like an industrial project where the production stops at the first product sample.”

Monzon’s work is centered on two registers, on the one hand what can be called Personal Mythology: scenes of holidays, immediate entourage, daily summary, and; on the other hand, urban scenes, landscape sceneries, logo insertions, “branding” of artists, signs of everyday visuals or capture of images, thus not hesitating in remixing his own works within recent ones.

Since his debut, Emmanuel Monzon explores the field between the image and its reproduction. ‘REMIX’ is his third individual exhibition, and his first in Singapore.

About the Artist:
Emmanuel Monzon, a French born Artist, who currently resides in Singapore. He graduated from the Beaux Arts in Paris, with honours, and also holds a degree in Visual Arts. Since 1992, he has exhibited his works mainly in France and has also participated in several arts fairs and collective exhibitions. Monzon is considered to be part of a stream of artists that have recently since the 90’s worked on ‘Everyday Visuals’ based on utilising voluntarily modest means in contrast to the current high tech world.

MICHELLE PAULINE  LIM

on

14th November 2008, Friday 7 pm - 9 pm

About the Exhibition:

In kindergarten and in my life, I have found that most of my vivid imaginations brought about in my childhood years have helped me see how simple life can be. Unleashed in Wonderland is a menagerie of whimsical glimpses, small insights that became clear to me while playing around with the idea that everyone at some point is living out a simple truth.  We outgrew the ability to believe in simple things… like fairytales our mothers used to read us at night.  Strangely enough I keep getting drawn back to those very stories.  Somehow, people’s personalities and their circumstances rhymed with those from the story books “at least to me secretly”. It starts off with Alice, a fairy tale character I was drawn to because of her motives for entering and intersecting Wonderland was simply curiosity, so as it is for me, exploring my strange and seemingly crazy world. As we go through our lives, we may encounter ways of living and reasoning that is quite different from our own, but it can never stop us from going far beyond our imagination and realizations to find what is true amidst the clamor of our lives. Wonderland is in fact our own world, only seen through the eyes of a child. May we continue to grow with hearts filled with imagination, passion and wonder that we may see life as children do and maybe one day, find a glimpse of your own  Wonderland, too.

Legends, myths and folklore that are passed down from generation to generation, whether through oral traditions or literature, comprise a huge portion of a country’s heritage. Stories from Home is a visual chronicle of various narratives from the Philippines. It explores the archipelago’s collective memory, ranging from mysticism, pourquoi stories and tales of creation to narrations of heroic feats.

Contemporary Filipino artists provide an insight to these allegories through their distinct interpretations. The diverse imagery in this collection is as vivid and vibrant as the lore it characterizes. This amalgam of representation is a dynamic portrayal culled from each artist’s stylistic aptitude and attitude. Replete of symbolism and meaning, Stories from Home is a provocative inquiry in the fertile imaginings of its rich cultural history.

ENDLESS CURVES OF NEON

JAMIE PAUL

29th July 2008, to 3rd august 2008

‘Endless curves of neon’ is the first showcase of work by British artist Jamie Paul in Singapore. Having had a handful of solo shows and multiple group shows in both the UK and Australia previously, this will be the first that displays new work produced in Singapore.

Heavily influenced by Jamie’s experiences in Singapore and Asia, ‘Endless curves of neon’ focuses on the multiple sensory delights that eastern modern society confronts us with.

In an ever changing virtual utopia of instant gratification, gluttony and fulfillment that continuously dominates, transforms and dictates ones tastes, dreams and desires, one cannot escape the overwhelming and potentially devastating impact that contemporary mass media threatens.

Our lives have become pre packaged for us, from our t-shirts to our shopping baskets to our pop idols to our holidays and subsequently slowly erase any trace of individuality or identity.

Each work offers a thought provoking reflection and insight of ones own self, society’s insatiable appetite for mass consumerism and indulgence and the seemingly desperate attempt for us to savor an untouched element of our uniqueness.

HERO

by

Ben Puah

The word HERO” refers to a character that displays courage and is a person who will self-sacrifice in the face of danger. That is heroism for the greater good of people. To me, hero is actually an ordinary person but living in an extraordinary circumstance. Who despite the odds being stacked against him or her, typically prevails in the end.

“Mixed thoughts went into the formulation of the “HERO” paintings, choosing a politician as my idol instead of the usual pop star, or actor/actress is not a fashionable choice. But “Hero” is neither a fashionista, of the so-called handsome, charming, beautiful face that appears in fashion, gossip magazines. That do not gained my respect.

I believe that the charismatic power in one is not about face value, the willingness to serve the people and bringing greater good to the people is even more attractive and appealing to me. To me, I think my dear hero Mr. Lee possessed all these great elements.

About Artist:

An internationally acclaimed artist, Ben Puah nicknamed Singapore’s Van Gogh is a leading figure in a new breed of contemporary Asian artists who's made a huge impact with his energy and vision.

Ben Puah was born in Singapore in 1976. He studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and LASALLE College of the Arts. He received his BFA with Distinction from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000.

A self-confessed artist of crazy artworks, Ben creates shocking and powerful works that refuse to fit into the mainstream. Apart from his critically acclaimed
Paintings, he also managed to produce overwhelming installations, curated wonderful exhibitions, working with schools on his “Colours of Life” community projects, produced high profile commissioned portrait works and the list goes on, needless to say Ben is one passionate, motivated man. He started the “Post Surreal Monopolyism” art movement in 1999.

Art is very important to Ben because it is a way of expressing oneself and an abstraction of how he feel about life. His works are like in the state of phantasmagoria where there is a mix of real and imagined elements. At the psychological level, he seemed to suffer from paranoid personality disorder and have a negative view about the world, and is quietly frantic at the same time. This resulted in the penetration of unsettled emotions where his art seems temperamental with an erratic behavior that tells the honest truth to his audience.

Ben is a versatile artist, not limiting himself only to painting in his artistic endeavors. Some of his more popular artistic works are sculptures and other objects, and he is also noted for his contributions to performance art and photography, among other areas.

Ben has exhibited his works in Singapore, Australia, Japan, USA, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, London, Malaysia and China. His artwork is in the public and private collections in numerous local and international locations. Ben has lectured at many schools and art institutions.

UTTERLY ART and FORTH GALLERY present

Chang Jinchao's

You are the Person who Came from the End of the World

WEDNESDAY 2nd JUL 2008 to SUNDAY 13th JUL 2008.

Enquiries may also be made from UTTERLY ART

Tel: 6226 2605  E-mail: utterlyart@pacific.net.sg

Shenyang artist Chang Jinchao invites you back into another production of his Theatre of the Absurd entitled You Are The Person Who Came From The End Of The World. In the spirit of Haruki Murakami, Samuel Beckett and Franz Kafka, the various alter-egos of the artist once again threaten the world as he knows it and draws him into a void – a state of suspension which is not possible to breach, but can only be reconciled in his mind and art.

This ‘other world’, as the artist calls it, is dark and inevitable. Its awakening consciousness arises as new people and experiences are encountered and the occasional epiphany is reached. But before new ideas are internalised, our consciousness is trapped in a surreal state. We can deny what we perceive and leave this other world. We can remain in a state of suspended animation. Or, we can marvel, embrace and re-fabricate a new reality.  This artist does.

In his third solo exhibition, Chang Jinchao’s once depressive monochromatic figures return with life and energy as they interact with one another and explore each other’s alter-egos. No longer searching for a writer, they challenge their own existence and reality and fill the void with their own narratives. Despite the nightmarish nature of his work, they have become existentially aware and brightly curious. They postulate that it is up to our selves to create an ethos of personal responsibility, outside of any entrenched belief system.

Chang Jinchao graduated from the LASALLE College of the Arts with a Masters in Fine Art in 2007, where he had previously received a BA in Fine Art (Printmaking) in 2006 and a Diploma in Jewellery in 2005. He has a BA in Design (Visual Communications) from Shenyang University, and has participated in several group shows and won awards in jewellery design, drawing and painting. He participated in the Chinese biennale Get It Louder for young creatives last year, which toured Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu. This is his third solo exhibition.

UTTERLY ART and FORTH GALLERY present

LIBRE by Reynold Dela Cruz

WEDNESDAY 11th JUN 2008 to SUNDAY 22nd JUNE 2008.

Enquiries may also be made from UTTERLY ART

Tel: 6226 2605  E-mail: utterlyart@pacific.net.sg

Libre is a word that can be found in romance languages such as French and Spanish.  It originated from the Latin liber which denotes the state of "being free" or having "freedom."  From the Spanish, who had colonized the Philippines for more than 300 years, Filipinos have understood libre in the vernacular to mean something that you get for free.

In this series, the artist Reynold Dela Cruz was inspired by the projects of the local government of his birthplace.  Constantly observing the social and economic events of his surroundings, Dela Cruz was fascinated by this "phenomenon" recently taking place as well in many cities and towns all over the country.  Libreng Sakay (Free Ride) which happens during transport strikes due to oil price hikes; Libreng Tule (Free Circumcision) a summer initiation rite for boys to "manhood"; Libreng Tubig (Free Water) an answer to the ever increasing price of this precious commodity, both drinking water and water used for bathing and daily washing; Libreng Edukasyon (Free Education) offered to children of poor families in the primary and high school levels.

The connotation of the original word libre may have been obscured over time, but if we think about it, the way it is now used in programs offered to poor families remains essentially the same: they promote a certain degree of freedom from the lack of one's basic necessities in life, a welcome respite for most.

Reynold Dela Cruz is a self-taught artist whose choice of career was vindicated when he won Juror’s Choice at the 1998 Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards, which led to him representing the Philippines at the 1998 Asean Art Awards held in Vietnam. Besides the Philippines, he has exhibited in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Vermont, USA. He was recently commissioned to paint a mural of Muntinlupa’s history in the newly constructed Muntinlupa City Government building. Libre is his sixth solo exhibition and first to be held overseas.

Noriko Suzuki-Bosco, Andrée Weschler, Dominic Fonde and B. Jane Cowie

from 29th May to 8th June 2008

About Exhibition:

When talking to Noriko about her work she said ‘my work is about fragments and memories’.  This immediately struck me as a good title for an exhibition.  I met Noriko and Andrée in November 2007 when we were all participating in a group exhibition about the universal home.  We connected during that exhibition, I was showing a few diverse glass pieces that were sand engraved, Andrée was showing piles and piles of drawing and Noriko was knitting.

Both Noriko and Andrée were interested in glass and I was interested to introduce glass to those willing to learn.  I love working with glass, and likewise enjoy teaching people how to cut glass, shape it and work with a material that has many different aspects.  I knew both artists drew on paper, so why not draw on glass.

I have with Dominic for some years and always admired his drawing ability, on paper as well as on glass.  My idea was to bring these 3 artists together so Dominic and I could teach Noriko and Andrée how to ‘draw on glass’.  I then invited Noriko and Andrée to come and work in my studio along with Dominic so we could all work together, exchange ideas, share stories and produce glass art within a creative environment.

Thus started our Monday morning sessions.  Informally we meet, presented a series of artists’ talks, discuss new ways to work with glass and develop art works.  Our arts practices are very diverse, yet we all share a passion for our work and are committed to exploring and developing our work as artists.  We have all relocated to Singapore for a variety of different reasons and although our styles are different, the notion of fragments and memories seems to touch us as we work together.  As a ‘working title’ the exhibition title weaves a common thread through each of our practices.

These glass-art making sessions have lead to an exchange of ideas and a dialogue about what our works might be with glass.  Individual words as fragments emerge.  We decided then to select a word as a fragment so that we may each developed a body of work in response to these self-selected words and as a response to the collaborative, cooperative and collective working environment where we have a chance to develop a creative synergy.

Our selected words are offered as a starting point for your reading of the works.

About artists:

About Dominic Fondé

My business card claims I am an artist.  My resume lists a college education in the UK studying glassblowing and commissions for glass engraving but through it all there has been a desire to tell stories.  Sometimes these stories start from a real life experience.  Sometimes they are pure fabrication.  More often than not the story relates to a glass object, be it an ornament or functional object.  I came to realise that these objects hold thoughts, feelings, ideas and emotions as easily as they can hold wine or flowers.

Over time the things I do for a living and the things I do simply to be happy, to understand the world, to catalogue my emotions and reactions, to relax, to dream, to entertain my friends, to protest at the things that anger me, to define myself as an artist and as a person, all have become welded together.

I am an artist that works with glass.  An expat from the UK, but above all, I am a story teller.

About Andrée Weschler

Andrée Weschler is a French, artist, living and practicing art in Asia for more than 12 years.  Andrée studied Visual Arts in Singapore, Australia and Les Beaux Arts de Paris.  She mainly exhibits in Asia, notably Singapore, Japan, Korea and in Australia.  Andrée Weschler works with many different media.  She typically uses and combines:

Drawing-Installation-Video-Photography-Sound-Performance

She is interested in using her body to understand and express her ideas.  The body is her tool to discover material and become a material in itself in her work.

Her work explores the boundaries of acceptable social constructs. Andrée Weschler performs in public spaces in order to challenge the general populace, to read to her performance of bodily difference.

About B. Jane Cowie

B. Jane Cowie has been working with glass for over 20 years.  Her commitment to art making, desire to learn and passion for glass inspired her to travel extensively.  Cowie has worked in numerous glass making studios and factories in Australia, England, Europe, USA, China and Japan to develop technical skill and an intimate understanding of glassmaking techniques and applications.

Continuing to exhibit widely in Australia, Europe, Japan and Singapore, Cowie is included in numerous public and private collections.  Her relocation to Singapore in 2003 has seen the emergence of a new interest in what ‘home’ means, living and working in Asia.  Cowie continues to develop her practice as an individual artist as well as designing and developing larger art glass installations with a team to artists and glassmakers.  These artworks are created for private and commercial spaces.  It is clear that Cowie’s passion for glass and art making continues unabated.

About Noriko Suzuki-Bosco

Noriko has a MA in Fine Art Painting from Winchester College of Art, UK and a BA in Fine Art Painting from Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London, UK.

She moved to Singapore in January 2007 and currently teaches part-time at LaSalle College of Arts.  The rest of the time she is busy being an artist and a mother.  Noriko paints, writes, performs, cooks or just makes things.

Forth Gallery presents The Spirits Live On by David Wells.

David Wells

About the exhibition:

The images in this collection portray visually what David Wells feels when he visits Angkor- an overwhelming visceral and spiritual connection to the energy of the place and the spirits of the people who walked through its temples and grounds before him.

Known as the Angkor era from 802 AD to 1432 AD, Angkor means Holy/Capital city and was used by the Khmer in Cambodia. Majestic in the heights of its success, modern day Angkor houses more than 70 temple ruins over more than 200 square kilometers. The bas-relief carvings in these temples tell stories of rival cultures, religion and of many bloody conflicts.

The temples in Angkor now sit seemingly silent, yet the presence of ‘others’ permeate the space; these grounds once being battlegrounds, church, school, homes, where battles were fought or where children frolicked on a summer day.

About the artist

David Wells was born in London, England in 1962, and has lived in Singapore since early 2005. He has been working with watercolors, oils and photography for more than 25 years and has exhibited widely throughout Asia and Europe.

UTTERLY ART & FORTH GALLERY

For enquiries, you may also contact UTTERLY ART at te1:6226 2605 Email: utterlyart@pacific.net.sg

About the exhibition

In this digital age, picture-perfect images are so easily generated and reproduced. The sheer weight of Melvin Culaba's brooding expressive strokes of oil on canvas and his idiosyncratic subjects runs counter to this trend. In emotionally-charged monolithic portraits and dark panoramic landscapes, Picture's Not Perfect delves into the psyche of the artist and his society. Each canvas plays out almost as a psycho social mystery, where the viewer seeks to uncover the impetus behind the situational drama and underlying melancholy that permeates each composition,

About the artist

Melvin Culaba (b. 1971) graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1993, and has exhibited extensively in the Philippines, Korea and the United States. He has been a Finalist at the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards from 1995-98 and 2006, and won several top awards at the Art Association of the Philippines annual painting competition and Metrobank Young Painters annual competition. He won a full grant for residency at the Vermont Studio Centre in 2005 and is a commissioned artist for the Official Christmas Cards of President Gloria Arroyo. Picture's Not Perfect is his 8th solo show and first in Singapore.

catopia poster

18th to the 29th of April 2008

The soft ones, the fluffy ones, the matronly ones and the gentle ones; every cat lover nows the complexity which accompanies each feline’s personality. If a dog is the “man’s best friend”, then the cat is a soul-mate.

Gwen and Ling Tze depict cats and their relationship with the people around them representing them in a manner that is non-intrusive. Cats have a deep sense of belonging to society and are yet very individualistic, territorial though also wanting to share.
These complexities of human emotions are also manifested in Gwen’s and Ling Tze’s paintings.

Ling Tze graduated from the Nayang Academy Of Fine Arts (1997-2000), with a Diploma in Fine Art and has held several group exhibitions in Singapore. She is a member of Slothstudio and works as freelance artist doing commission painting, mural painting, commercial illustration and t-shirt design and print.

Gwen uses acrylic on canvas and her works contain a strong appeal to the realm of the fairy-tale. The cats in her work are personified and are depicted to be involved in narratives involving other animals, all of whom express emotion which is almost human. Painted in clean lines and with clear details, Gwen’s portraits of her favorite childhood pet spring both artist and viewer back into the years of her youth and idealism.

Gwen graduated from the University of Wolverhampton, UK, with a BA(Hons) in illustration in 1997; has exhibited in Wolverhampton, London, Malaysia and Korea, and has work experience as a glass designer, illustrator and a web designer.
